RAPHINE, Va. (AP) — One person is dead following a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 81 in Augusta County.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the accident occurred Tuesday morning in the northbound lanes near the 210 mile marker.
Officials say two vehicles initially collided in the northbound lanes. A tractor-trailer braked in order to avoid the two crashed vehicles ahead of it when it was rear-ended by a passenger car that was unable to stop in time.
The impact of the crash caused the car to catch fire and killed the driver. Police have not released the identity of the deceased.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash. One person from the initial crash was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
