VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

A BLOODY DAY IN UKRAINE AS OVER A DOZEN UKRANIAN TROOPS WERE KILLED AND DOZENS OF OTHERS WERE WOUNDED THURSDAY.

PRO RUSSIAN INSURGENTS ATTACKED A MILITARY CHECKPOINT, MAKING THIS THE DEADLIEST RAID IN THE WEEKS OF FIGHTING IN EASTERN UKRAINE.

WITNESSES TO THE ATTACK WERE STUNNED, ONE SAYING HE WAS TERRIFIED TO TALK AS THREE OF HIS FRIENDS LAY IN THE FIELDS DEAD.

(NATS OF UKRANIAN SOLDIER)

THE ATTACK COMES JUST THREE DAYS BEFORE THE COUNTRY'S PRESIDENTIAL VOTE AND ON THE HEELS OF RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADMIR PUTIN'S ORDER TO WITHDRAW TROOPS FORM THE BORDER.

SOUNDBITE (English) Rear Admiral John Kirby, Pentagon Spokesperson:

"President Putin said he's ordered them back to their home bases, which to us means a wholesale withdrawal of all the forces that are arrayed on the Ukrainian border. We've not seen that yet."

MEANWHILE, PRO- RUSSIAN SEPARTISTS SHOWED OFF AN ARRAY OF UKRANIAN WEAPONS SEIZED FROM THE RAID.

REBELS IN THE EAST HAVE PLEDGED TO DERAIL ANY EFFORTS TO CONDUCT THE PRESIDENTIAL VOTE ON SUNDAY.
