NEW YORK (AP) — Twenty New York City schools have been chosen for a new effort to prepare students for technology jobs. They'll take classes in computer programming, robotics, web design and other tech fields starting in sixth grade.

The new software engineering program was announced Monday at the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology in Brooklyn. It's one of the schools selected.

About 1,000 middle school and high school students are expected to participate next fall. Their ranks are expected to grow to 3,500 by 2016.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has stressed trying to make New York a more muscular tech competitor to California's Silicon Valley. He says the new school program will create "the home-grown workforce our city needs" while opening career doors for students.
