3 heading to funeral killed in collision at the Spingfield Interchange

Three people who were traveling to Florida to attend a relative's funeral were killed in a collision at the Springfield Interchange, police said.

The incident happened at about 7 p.m. Thursday at the westbound flyover ramp of the Capital Beltway that leads to Interstate 95 south. A tractor-trailer that was stopped in traffic was rear-ended by pickup truck, Virginia State Police said.

The pickup truck's three occupants died at the scene, police said.

The driver was identified as 87-year-old Peter Stesney Jr., of Allentown, Pa. The passengers were identified as were Bernice Supinski, 85, of Bath, Pa., and Laura Kordelski, 51, of Allentown, Pa. Police said that the deceased were all related.

The tractor-trailer's driver was not injured.

State police are investigating the incident.
