Community members surrendered about 100 weapons during the "Gift Cards for Guns" event on Saturday in Prince George's County, police said.
At the event at Oxon Hill United Methodist Church, people could voluntarily turn in firearms in exchange for gift cards. For every weapon turned in, a citizen could receive a Visa gift card with a value of up to $100, depending on the type of weapon.
Prince George's County police partnered with the NAACP and the Prince George's County Youth Strategies Division for the event. The initiative is an effort to help reduce gun violence, police said.
