Congressman Frank Kratovil proposed a series of debates among the candidates in the campaign for Maryland’s 1st Congressional District. Kratovil called for 3 debates across the district on the Lower Shore, Upper Shore and Western Shore. Kratovil also stated that the debates could be a forum to discuss Harris’s unfair 23% sales tax plan, which would increase taxes on middle class families by up to $6,789 per year according to President Bush’s tax advisory panel and eliminate the home mortgage interest deduction. Kratovil also said, “In addition to further discussing your tax plan, these debates will provide an opportunity to share our views on other key issues including the future of the Social Security program, the significant differences in our positions on protecting the Chesapeake Bay and your continued opposition to common sense efforts to rein in risky and abusive behavior by Wall Street.”
