An acting chief for the Fairfax County Police Department has been appointed, officials said.

Lt. Colonel James A. Morris will begin the position on Saturday, as Chief David Rohrer becomes a deputy county executive. Morris will serve as acting chief until a permanent police chief is appointed.

Morris has been with the police department for about 23 years, according to a news release. He has served as deputy chief of investigations and operation support since March and previously served as deputy chief of police for administration.

He will receive an annual salary of $184,129 in his new position.
