“It’s Global Warming Stupid,” Bloomberg’s Businessweek asserted this morning on its front cover.

The cover story assets that storms like Hurricane Sandy (which was downgraded to a tropical storm as it hit the United States) are strengthened by global warming. It pivots on a tweet from Jonathan Foley, director of the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota: “Would this kind of storm happen without climate change? Yes. Fueled by many factors. Is storm stronger because of climate change? Yes.”

But Roger Pielke Jr. writes an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal that put things in in perspective.

“While it’s hardly mentioned in the media, the U.S. is currently in an extended and intense hurricane drought,’” he writes. “The last Category 3 or stronger storm to make landfall was Wilma in 2005. The more than seven years since then is the longest such span in over a century.”

The Bloomberg piece insists that its time to put climate change back into the political equation, calling for carbon taxes and moving away from coal as an energy source.

With the storm hitting home in New York City, expect more New York-based media outlets to think themselves trapped in an enviro-disaster film.
