The Alexandria police officer who was shot in the head during a traffic stop in late February was moved across town to a rehabilitation hospital Thursday to continue his recovery.

Officer Peter Laboy, 45, could talk and recognize people and has done some walking, said MedStar Washington Hospital Center spokesman Matt Brock.

Laboy was moved to the MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital, and doctors estimated that his recovery process would take 6 to 12 months. Brock said that doctors called the case "one in a million."

The Alexandria Police Department will host a blood drive in Laboy's honor on March 21.
