Alexandria police officer shot; cab driver in custody

UPDATE: The officer has been identified as 45-year-old Peter Laboy. He's a 17-year veteran of the Alexandria Police Department and has spent the past six years as a motorcycle officer. He was in critical condition Wednesday night.

The suspect — 27-year-old Kashif Bashir, of Woodbridge — has been charged with malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond, police said.

An Alexandria police officer was in critical condition after being shot, and a man suspected in the shooting has been taken into custody, authorities said.

About 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, an Alexandria police officer issued a lookout for a yellow taxi in connection with a minor traffic infraction. A Motor Unit officer spotted the cab soon after that and initiated a traffic stop at South St. Asaph and Wilkes streets, in Old Town near Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy. Authorities believe that during the traffic stop, the cab's driver shot the officer, according to police spokesman Jody Donaldson.

The motor unit officer, a man, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Donaldson said that the officer was undergoing surgery Wednesday afternoon.

Another officer spotted the cab heading southbound on Washington Street and tried to stop it, but the taxi sped off. After police chased the cab, it crashed into a citizen's vehicle at Fort Hunt Road and Bellevue Boulevard.

The cab's driver, a man, was taken to a hospital and then released to police. Detectives were interviewing the driver Wednesday afternoon, Donaldson said.

A person in the citizen's vehicle was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Fairfax County police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt said.

"Definitely this is a tragic incident," Donaldson said. "Our prayers are with the officer and his family."
