A Fort Washington homeowner shot and killed an intruder inside his home, police said.

The shooter, a sheriff's deputy in the city of Alexandria, arrived at his home on Rose Marie Drive around 10:50 p.m. Monday and found the front door damaged, Prince George's County police said.

The deputy went inside and was confronted by a suspect. The homeowner shot the suspect, who stumbled out of the home and collapsed.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the homeowner interrupted a burglary in progress and that other suspects may have been at the home, police said.

Police on Wednesday were not releasing any further information on the intruder who had been killed.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call the Prince George's County police at (301) 772-4925.
