Ukraine has finally signed the Association Agreement with the European Union – an accord for closer economic and political ties with the EU and non-member countries. The country’s path to this milestone has been challenging—and tragic, as no other country reaching for that status has had to throw itself into the chaos of revolution, followed by a war costing hundreds of lives. Petro Poroshenko , Ukraine’s newly elected president, signed the pact on June 27th. Former president Viktor Yanukovych’s unexpected decision to nix the document and turn East, to Russia, sparked what would become a revolution that saw his ouster and the Kremlin’s controversial seizure of Crimea.
