Arlington County Deputy Sheriff Craig Patterson has been charged in the shooting death of a 22-year-old man in Alexandria, police said.
Patterson, 44, was taken into custody Thursday evening at a residence in Spotsylvania County, Alexandria police said. He is charged with murdering Julian Dawkins, a driver for the "PBS NewsHour" program.
On May 22, Patterson fatally shot Julian Dawkins after a confrontation in the Lynhaven area in Alexandria. The 17-year veteran deputy sheriff was off-duty at the time and was placed on administrative leave after the incident, officials said.
Patterson remained at the scene after the shooting. He was questioned by police on the day of the incident but was released. Police had said that the investigation would take time to complete, and Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille also urged residents to be patient during the investigation.
