Sixty-four percent of Americans, including 48 percent of Democrats, believe that "big government" is the single biggest threat to the future of the United States, with even Democrat concern over big government spiking since 2009.

"The 64% of Americans who say big government will be the biggest threat to the country is just one percentage point shy of the record high," Gallup reports in a poll released today, "while the 26% who say big business is down from the 32% recorded during the recession."

Gallup adds that the concern about big government among Democrats has increased since March 2009, when it sat at 32 percent, to 48 percent now -- a 50 percent jump.

The fear of big government seems to undercut President Obama's often-repeated claim that the financial crisis -- caused by rogue companies -- ruptured the American people's faith in the American dream and social "compact."
