Mom: Rubio took “best picture” with son with Down Syndrome, Trump mocked disabled reporter

Recently, Marco Rubio’s campaign retweeted Rubio posing for a picture with a man who has Down Syndrome. While he has a disability, his mother says he makes up for it with his love for politics.

Drew, who was that eager fan of Rubio, had gone with his parents to a pre-debate rally in Houston. Like all the other excited supporters, he waited and hoped for a picture with his favorite candidate. While his mother, Andrea Oyler, doubted her son would be able to, and even wondered if Rubio would dismiss them, fortunately the experience turned out much different.

Writing for the Independent Journal Opinion, Oyler wrote of their experience.

In the throng of the crowd, Drew bravely called out to Rubio, “Marco, I need a picture!” What Oyler described happening next is truly touching:

The candidate looked at him, and gave us the biggest smile, then stopped and leaned in towards Drew for the best picture ever. It was real. He was real. And everyone around us witnessed a very special moment in time.

Oyler closes by mentioning how personal #NeverTrump became for her that day, as he had previously mocked a disabled reporter:

Contrast this with Donald Trump’s horrific mocking of New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has a musculoskeletal disorder. How one treats those among us who are different is an indicator of character. A glimpse into the heart of the man. Trump is not just a flamboyant candidate who says outrageous things. Trump is, in every sense of the word, a bully. #NeverTrump took on real meaning for our family this week.

How would Trump have reacted had he seen Drew? Would he have mocked him? Hopefully not. Would he have dismissed him, like Oyler feared at the Rubio event? It’s possible. Thankfully, this family were dealing with Rubio and not Trump and won’t have to know.
