When Mitt Romney had a brief brain freeze during tonight's debate, he grabbed a line about Newt Gingrich and his relationship with Reagan back in the 80s.

"You were mentioned once in Ronald Reagan's diary," Romney said. "He said that you had an idea in a meeting with young congressman, he didn't think it was a good idea and he dismissed it."

The Examiner's Michael Barone reported on this earlier today, noting that Reagan dismissed Gingrich's idea for a spending freeze becuase it would freeze defense spending, and that if he made an exception for defense all the special interests would demand one too.
