On CNN last night, David Axelrod defended President Obama for taking time to speak to contraception activist Sandra Fluke after she was called a slut by Rush Limbaugh.

"The president sought to comfort a young woman who had been vilified nationally for speaking her mind on a matter of importance to her," Axelrod said. "Rush distorted what she was saying and called her horrible names and in so doing, slandered not just her but all women of America."

When asked about slurs against women from popular liberal entertainers, Axelrod would only say that Rush Limbaugh was more than just an entertainer for the Republican party.

"I think one of the reasons why Gov. Romney and others were so timid in speaking out is because he's the de facto leader of the Republican Party and to take him on would be to risk your own standing within the party."
