WH defensive about meeting Muslim Brotherhood

White House officials met with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood this week because the Islamist group will play "a prominent role" in Egyptian politics, President Obama's spokesman explained.

"It is a matter of fact that the Muslim Brotherhood will play a prominent role in Egypt’s political life going forward," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said today defensively when asked the names of the Muslim Brotherhood representatives who met with the White House.

Carney seemed concerned about backlash over the meetings. "Members of the Muslim Brotherhood met with John McCain when he visited -- and Lindsay Graham, two senators, when they visited Egypt," he said.
