On Piers Morgan yesterday, Newt Gingrich said that he was "surprised" that President Obama  chose to run ads against Mitt Romney highlighting his record at Bain Capital, because his attempt to smear Romney with similar ads "didn't work"

"We found out when we got in a fight with Mitt Romney over this that it didn't work." Gingrich said. "People understand free enterprise. People understand sometimes you succeed, sometimes you fail but they refused to take a one-sided view of it."

Morgan then played video highlights of Gingrich's anti-Bain ads, but the former speaker remained unflappable.

"Having seen those, you would think that President Obama and Axelrod and others would say, 'gee, that didn't work,'" Gingrich said. "And the fact is objectively, it didn't work.
