White House Press Secretary Jay Carney refused to promise not to take quotations from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney out of context this year, despite pressure to make the pledge during the White House press briefing today.

"That's a rather remarkable question," Carney replied when asked to make the pledge, before turning it back on the reporters. "Certainly, we believe that you all ought to do your jobs and report on context."

He refused to "speculate" on what White House officials might say when discussing Romney in the future. "I would say that our general position is that we're for truthful, accurate, factual reporting that's done in context," Carney said.
