In style, McCarthy makes history

With a spectacular 8-iron shot to within a foot for a birdie on the final hole, Burtonsville’s Denny McCarthy became the youngest winner in the 89-year history of the Maryland Open Wednesday at Manor Country Club.

The 17-year-old McCarthy, a senior at Georgetown Prep, shot a final-round 70 and finished with an 8-under-par 202, holding off a determined challenge from Potomac’s Keith Unikel, a former Maryland Open winner (1998), who fired a back nine 31 to make it close.
