Renovation of the historic boilermaker building near Nationals Park is well underway, marking the latest construction in what's been a busy six months for the Capitol Riverfront. The neighborhood now has nearly 1.4 million square feet under construction, representing 13 percent of the completed construction over the last several years.
According to the Capitol Riverfront BID's second quarter report, the construction underway totals $731 million in value. Complete construction totals $2.4 billion and planned projects represent an estimated $5.9 billion in construction.
Forest City, developer of the Boilermaker Shops located on Tingey Street behind the U.S. Department of Transportation building, announced in June that it had signed seven retailers between the Shops and its mixed-use project at the Foundry Lofts.
The Lofts, which just started leasing apartments, will be home to Potbelly sandwich shop and Kruba Thai and Sushi restaurant. The Shops are getting Buzz Bakery and a craft brewery, both managed by the Neighborhood Restaurant Group. Austin Grill, brb-Be Right Burger, and two restaurant concepts by Thompson Hospitality are also slated to open at the Shops.
Both are scheduled to open in the fall.
