The man authorities believe is the East Coast Rapist — responsible for a string of attacks along the East Coast between 1997 and 2009 — could soon be extradited to Virginia, after having been held in Connecticut since his arrest there in March.
Connecticut has decided to extradite 40-year-old Aaron H. Thomas, a prosecutor told the New Haven Register. The state had initially declined to extradite Thomas to Prince William County.
Prosecutors in New Haven would not explain the reversal. The Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney could not immediately be reached Tuesday.
Thomas and his attorney intend to fight the extradition and seek a speedy trial in Connecticut, the Register reported.
East Coast Rapist attacks have been reported in Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The earliest known was in Forestville in 1997. The most recent was the rape of two Virginia teenagers in Dale City on Halloween night in 2009.
