Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett is expected to cruise to reelection this fall, as he faces no primary challengers in the Democratic stronghold.

But his Republican opponent missed the memo.

“Not one person has told me I can’t win this thing,” 38-year-old Daniel Vovak told the Montgomery County Sentinel. “The important thing to understand about me is that I’m a Republican who works with the Democrats; I actually take most of my political advice from Democrats.”

Vovak, a writer and film producer, told the paper he is running because Leggett backed out of deals with public safety workers to balance the budget.

“I hold no personal resentment against Ike, but I know that he lied to the unions, and they need a government they can trust,” he said.

However, Leggett recently approved bargaining agreements with unions, granting members as many as 48 additional paid hours off next year.
