Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will campaign Tuesday in southwest Virginia as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee amps up his efforts in one of the most critical swing states of the election cycle.

Romney will hold a noon event in Salem at Carter Machinery Company, Inc. It’s open to the public and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, a key Romney supporter in the state, was recruiting attendees Monday morning via Twitter.

Romney will also spend Wednesday afternoon in Northern Virginia with a similar event at electronic design company EIT, LLC in Sterling, his campaign announced later Monday.

The two-day swing through the state comes on the heels of Romney releasing a Virginia-specific ad last week that lays out the first 100 days of what a Romney presidency would look like. He highlights repealing President Obama’s health care reforms and opening up Virginia’s coasts to offshore drilling as two initiatives intended to help Old Dominion.

Obama frequently crosses the Potomac to visit Virginia and his campaign has more than 15 field offices scattered throughout the state.

According to Romney’s political website, his next scheduled event in the commonwealth is a July 11 phone bank in Fairfax County that will target women, a demographic with which Romney is struggling.
