President Obama called the Supreme Court’s decision Thursday to uphold his signature health care overhaul “a victory for people all over this country.”

“The highest court in the land has now spoken,” Obama said in brief remarks from the East Room of the White House. “We will continue to implement this law.”

Obama said the divisive political debate swirling around the 2010 health care law, which Republicans vehemently oppose, “completely misses the point.”

“It should be pretty clear by now that I didn’t do this because it was good politics,” Obama said.

He named Republican nominee Mitt Romney as an early supporter of the most controversial provision in the law, the individual mandate that requires everyone to buy health insurance.

“This idea has enjoyed support from members of both parties, including the current Republican nominee for president,” Obama quipped.

He delivered a sharp warning to Republicans in Congress, who are gearing up for a vote to repeal the law.

“What the country can’t afford to do is refight the political battles of two years ago,” he said.
