The Barenaked Ladies has had a resurgence of late. But don't call it a comeback, because the Canadian rockers never really left.

"It's not like we're Styx and we're coming back," joked the band's bassist Jim Creeggan, speaking by phone from San Diego.

The Barenaked Ladies performs at Wolf Trap on Wednesday as part of the band's Last Summer on Earth Tour. Wednesday's show includes Big Head Todd & the Monsters and Cracker.

Blues Traveler is also on the bill at other tour stops.

"We used to play a lot of summer tours," Creeggan said. "We realized that we like to do that. We wanted to reconnect with some older buddies like the Blues Traveler guys. It's a nice way for us to connect with our fans as well."

With hits such as "One Week" and "It's All Been Done," the Barenaked Ladies became a fixture on '90s radio. But the band has remained active, despite the departure of founding member Steven Page in 2009. The band's last album of original material was 2010's "All in Good Time," and it just released the rarities compilation "Stop Us If You've Heard This One Before" in May. Creeggan said they're currently working on the score for an "Animal House" musical adaptation and plan to release a new single later this summer.

In one capacity that fans can hear a sampling of the Barenaked Ladies' work is on the small screen: They wrote and perform the theme song to the hit sitcom "The Big Bang Theory."

"When we play it live, people say, 'Oh, it's these guys,' " Creeggan said. "The show has sort of surpassed us."

Creeggan said the show's creators contacted the band about doing the theme song.

"I think they identified the show with our sensibilities somewhat," he said. "I think they hit a home run. For us, it was great to collaborate. Sometimes you get a call for these things, and it's kind of an audition or a competition between you and other bands. This one, they were like, 'We want you guys.' "

With a new single, major tour, musical adaptation, rarities album and a hit theme song, the Barenaked Ladies are going as strong as ever.

"It's good momentum right now for us," Creeggan said.
