D.C. United’s first use of its connection with Indonesia has come since the team added Indonesian media magnate Erick Thohir as an investor and partner in June. Up and coming Indonesian midfielder Andik Vermansyah will spend a couple weeks of training in Washington.

The 20-year-old, who played against the Los Angeles Galaxy during its Asian tour last fall – famously getting scissor tackled by David Beckham and later exchanging jerseys with the English superstar – will arrive on Sept. 10.

Vermansyah’s stint with D.C. United is officially just training, but who knows how things might unfold. At the very least, if there’s a promising Indonesian pipeline to be had, D.C. is in prime position to exploit it. This is the first proof.
