A D.C. man who, prosecutors say, hit another man in the head with a golf club during an altercation in an apartment complex parking lot in June has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

Clement Newton, 38, pleaded guilty in July in D.C. Superior Court to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors say Newton and another man got into an argument on June 11 in an apartment complex parking lot on the 5200 block of 3rd St. NE. Newton's car was blocking the exit from the lot, as the man was attempting to pull out of the lot. Newton refused to move despite several requests from the man, who grew so frustrated that he punched Newton in the face, according to court documents.

In retaliation, Newton approached the man from behind and swung a golf club like a baseball bat at his head, prosecutors said.

The man suffered "massive head injuries."
