President Obama touts foreign policy as a bright spot in his presidency, but former President Carter’s national security adviser says that the United States is “rapidly, rapidly” losing power in the Middle East.

“We’re dealing here with a messy region which is increasingly slipping into increased instability — a region in which American domination is rapidly, rapidly coming to an end,” Zbigniew Brzezinski said today on Morning Joe.

The Washington Post reports today that “more than three weeks after attacks in this city killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, sensitive documents remained only loosely secured in the remains of the U.S. mission here on Wednesday, offering visitors easy access to delicate details about American operations in Libya.”

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee investigators reported yesterday that the Obama administration had ample warning that the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was at risk.

In addition multiple U.S. federal government officials have confirmed to the Committee that, prior to the September 11 attack, the U.S. mission in Libya made repeated requests for increased security in Benghazi,” the committee wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (my emphasis).

With respect to the anti-Islam video that Obama’s team initially blamed as the proximate cause for the attack, Brzezinski suggested that a “crack down” on the filmmakers might be appropriate based on the possibility that the film trailer was produced in order “to provoke violence” on the part of Muslims against Americans.

“I would like us to take a more explicit to the Muslim world: we not only condemn this, but if there are evil forces at work trying to provoke violence between us and you, we have the obligation to investigate and crack down,” Brzezinski said.
