A sixth fondling incident in the Springfield area has been reported, officials said.

The assault is believed to have taken place around 7:30 p.m. between Sept. 9 and Sept. 13. A 25-year-old woman told police that she was walking on Cumberland Avenue near Dinwiddie Street by the Commerce Street bus stop when a man approached from behind, groped her, and fled, Fairfax County police officials said.

The woman described her attacker as white man who is 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 and was wearing blue pants and a white T-shirt.

The victim in this assault came forward while detectives were conducting a neighborhood canvass Thursday to inform people about the series of fondling incidents in the area.

Five other attacks have been reported to have taken place in the past several weeks, and all six are believed to be related, police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said. In many of the assaults, the suspect was described as Hispanic, and in three of the attacks, the man was described as wearing a plain, red baseball cap.

Caldwell said that detectives have been following up on numerous leads.
