Hillary Clinton stepped forward last night to take responsibility for the lack of security at the Benghazi embassy, but remember when “the buck stopped” with President Obama?

“For ultimately, the buck stops with me.  As President, I have a solemn responsibility to protect our nation and our people.  And when the system fails, it is my responsibility,” President Obama explained in a televised statement from the White House in 2010.

At the time, Obama was discussing an investigation of intelligence failures after the failed “underwear bomber” attack on Christmas Day in 2009.

“I have repeatedly made it clear in public, with the American people, and in private, with my national security team that I will hold my staff, our agencies and the people in them accountable when they fail to perform their responsibilities at the highest levels,” Obama said.

In July, President Obama again used Harry Truman’s famous slogan when talking about the Mitt Romney’s role at Bain Capital.

“Well, here’s what I know, we were just talking about responsibility and as president of the United States, it’s pretty clear to me that I’m responsible for folks who are working in the federal government and you know, Harry Truman said the buck stops with you,” he explained in an interview with an ABC News affiliate.

Referring to Romney, the President added, “[I]f he aspires to being president one of the things you learn is, you are ultimately responsible for the conduct of your operations.”
