A baby died Wednesday morning after becoming unresponsive at Metro's L'Enfant Plaza station.

Authorities were called to the station around 8:15 a.m. about an unconscious infant, said D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Battalion Chief Brian Lee.

The baby, who was accompanied by its mother, appeared to be a newborn, he said, just a few days old though the exact age was not available. Medics tried to resuscitate the baby but it was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital. WTOP first reported the death.

Lee said there were no obvious signs of trauma, and he said preliminary information indicated the death was due to natural causes.

D.C. police are investigating while awaiting autopsy results, said Officer Tisha Gant.
