A former University of Maryland student who made online threats about a shooting rampage was sentenced Thursday to three years of supervised probation.

Alexander Song, 19, also received a six month suspended jail sentence during a hearing in Prince George's County District Court.

Prosecutors characterized the former honors student as a bright teen that broke down under severe academic pressure.

They also acknowledged there was little chance Song could have carried out his online threats. Song didn't have any weapons, or access to any.

Song remains banned from the University of Maryland campus and is not allowed to have access to any weapons, according to the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office.
