A 44-year-old Woodbridge man was killed Monday night when a Virginia Railway Express train struck him in Prince William County.
The man was hit at 7:04 p.m. near Cherry Hill Road in Dumfries, according to Prince William County Police.
Police said the man was seen standing on the tracks as the train approached and did not move out of the train's path. He died at the scene.
The death delayed train service along the Fredericksburg line and stranded riders on the striking train for hours. Initially police said buses would need to rescue the riders while they investigated, according to VRE. But then a rescue train was finally allowed to pull along side.
The riders were finally on the move by about 9:50 p.m., nearly three hours after the man was hit.
