Early returns look grim for Mourdock

Can Richard Mourdock pull off a victory in his Indiana Senate race after his controversial debate comments -- widely and unfairly misconstrued though they may have been? So far, it doesn't look good.

Recall that John McCain just barely lost Indiana in 2008. And if you look from county to county, Mourdock is underperforming McCain so far.

In Steuben County, for example, Mourdock has 53%. McCain got 54%. In Vigo, Mourdock has 40%. McCain had 42%. In Whitley, Mourdock has 58%. McCain had 60%.

It's still early, and none of these counties has reported in fully, but the early returns seem to hint at a victory for Democrat Joe Donnelly.
