Updated 4:36 p.m.: The D.C. police internal affairs division is investigating the death of a woman who died while in police custody Friday night, according to authorities.

Ukalie Boyd, 42, of Northwest D.C. injured herself while in a cell at the 3rd District station, according to a police report. She was transported to George Washington University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m., according to the report.

It was unclear Saturday afternoon how Boyd injured herself -- an autopsy is pending, according to spokesman Officer Araz Alali.

An internal affairs investigation is standard procedure when a suspect in the police department's care dies, Alali said.

Boyd was arrested at about 4:45 p.m. Friday afternoon for assaulting a police officer, simple assault and possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

According to a report detailing her arrest, Boyd jumped out of a cab at the corner of 14th Street and Irving Street NW and began assaulting her boyfriend as he tried to walk away from the fight.

Police at the scene found a glass pipe in Boyd's mouth and a white rock-like substance in her pocket, according to the report.

When a police officer attempted to loosen Boyd's handcuffs, Boyd bit the officer on the left arm and began kicking her in the leg, chest and mouth, the report states.
