Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said that former CIA director David Petraeus must testify before Congress about the Benghazi terrorist attack, despite his resignation over an extramarital affair.

“I’m on the intelligence committee, Mike Rogers is the chairman, but I strongly believe that David Petraeus has to be a witness at that hearing — if not this week, then in the weeks after,” King said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Petraeus withdrew from the hearing after he resigned.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., gave no indication of his position on calling Petraeus in his statement after the CIA director resigned.

“I appreciate the decades of service David Petraeus has given to our country,” Rogers said in a statement.  “His entire career has been spent defending and protecting the United States. I am confident the CIA will continue to successfully carry out its vital mission through this transition.”

King wondered if it was possible for President Obama not to have known that Petraeus was under investigation. “To have someone out there in such a sensitive position who the FBI thought perhaps could have been compromised or was under the scope of an FBI investigation who may or may not have been having an affair at the time — that, to me, had to have been brought to the president or certainly to the National Security Council,” he said. “If not, the FBI was derelict in its duty.”
