After win, mini-meltdown by Niumatalolo

As postgame tirades go, it was far short of classics by Lee Elia and Hal McRae. Nothing to the level of Mike Gundy or Dennis Green. But it was noteworthy because it was mild-mannered Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo lashing out at a question he deemed inappropriate after his team’s 21-10 win over Texas State.

The effort by his team’s offense was far from artistic as the Mids missed two field goals, lost a fumble, and turned it over on downs. But when asked about it, Niumatalolo went out of character.

“We’re 7-4. We’re going to a bowl game. We’re getting ready for Army. I don’t know what else to say,” Niumatalolo said. “Why do you guys always want to dwell on the negatives? We had some huge defensive stops and no questions asked about that. I guess that’s just the way the media operates.”

When the next question came about the Navy defense, Niumatalolo was still ticked off.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Niumatololo said. “I thought our defense played great … But nobody wants to talk about defense. I’m just getting a little emotional because our seniors have played great, we grind out a win, our defense plays great. I guess I shouldn’t get so mad.”
