A 40-year-old man fell about 35 to 40 feet from the parking garage at the Ballston Common Mall, police officials said.

About 12:40 p.m. Monday, police were informed that a man had fallen from the G4 level of the parking lot, about four stories above ground.

Based on an investigation, police believe that the man was driving and caused damage to another vehicle. In an effort to flee the collision scene, the man exited his vehicle and went to jump over the edge of the garage, Arlington police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. The man caught himself and was hanging over the ledge for a moment before falling to the ground and hitting his head on the sidewalk.

The man sustained head injuries and potentially has internal injuries because of the distance he fell, Sternbeck said. He was taken to a hospital, and no one else reported being injured in the incident.

Charges are expected against the man in connection with the alleged hit-and-run. Sternbeck said that police have run into the man before for "alcohol-related incidents," but the spokesman would not get into the specifics of these incidents.
