A resident of the D.C. area could become $425 million richer on Wednesday night -- but so could people who live in 40 other states.

Lottery officials said no one matched the six winning numbers in Saturday's Powerball drawing, pushing the estimated jackpot to $425 million, a Powerball record.

The top prize could grow, organizers said, as interest intensifies ahead of the record drawing.

But the $425 million jackpot isn't even the biggest lottery prize this year. In March, the Mega Millions game offered a $656 million prize.

There were three winning tickets for that lottery, including one jointly purchased by three Maryland educators.

Players hoping for their own dose of lucrative luck this time around face steep odds: The Multi-State Lottery Association says the odds of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510.
