A 22-year-old Falls Church resident was killed by a boat propeller in Dominica Saturday afternoon, police report.

The victim was identified as Casey Shulman, a fourth-year University of Virginia student. She was in the Caribbean island as part of the school's Semester at Sea program, though the accident occurred during a recreational boating trip that was organized indepedently of the school program, according to University of Virginia Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer Patricia Lampkin.

Shulman was swimming just off the beach in the west coast community of Mero -- where she and a group of other students had taken a trip -- when she was struck by a dive boat's propeller, according to Police Inspector Richmond Valentine. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.
