Updated at 1:34 p.m.: Police have identified the victim as 45-year-old Cesar Smith of Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County police are investigating the death of a man found in a Gaithersburg apartment as a homicide.

Shortly after 12 a.m. Monday, police went to an apartment onWhetstone Drive and found a man suffering from trauma to his body. The victim had died at the scene, and his cause of death is undetermined, police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the victim and at least one other man were inside the apartment when multiple people entered. The group members separated the two men, and they were heard arguing with the man who was killed before they left the apartment. The other man who had been in the apartment then found the victim and called police.

Investigators believe that the incident was not random, but they do not know what the relationship was between the deceased and the people suspected in his death. Police did not know whether anything was taken from the apartment.
