D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray slammed city lawmakers Tuesday evening for approving a batch of proposals that he says the District cannot afford.

"I think that's kind of irresponsible," Gray said during a meeting with reporters. "Whenever I did legislation, I tried to figure out where the funding was coming from."

But Gray said he was unlikely to wield his mayoral veto to stop what his administration said was $343 million in spending over four years that the city doesn't have the money to support.

"Usually, we try to work stuff out with them beforehand because once you veto, that creates a different dynamic altogether," Gray said.

The D.C. Council met for much of Tuesday in one of their final legislative sprints of the year. Any bills that aren't approved by the end of the session will not be enacted in 2012.
