The Virginia Democratic Party unanimously elected its first African-American leader on Saturday.

Three-term Alexandria Del. Charniele Herring was chosen to succeed former Del. Brian Moran, also from Alexandria.

Calling her election "historic," gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe said Herring's "compelling life story and dedication to public service enable her to be the strong leader and effective communicator our party needs."

The Associated Press contributed reporting.
