Just days after the Michigan legislature passed a right-to-work law, President Obama attacked the legislation and called for the creation of “good, new, union jobs.”
“What we shouldn’t be doing is trying to take away your rights to bargain for better wages and work conditions,” Obama said at a Daimler factory in Redford, Mich., this afternoon, per a live transcription. “These so called right to work laws, they don’t have to do ith economics — they have everything to do with politics. What they’re really doing is trying to talk about the right to work for less money.”
The right-to-work legislation allows workers to opt out of joining a union — or at least of paying dues to unions — contrary to current law in many states, which often allows unions to write contracts that require employees to pay the unions in order to be allowed to work at the company. Gov. Rick Snyder, R-Mich., is expected to sign the right-to-work bill tomorrow.
“America is not going to compete based on low skill, low wage, low workers rights,” Obama said.”There’s always some other country that can treat it’s workers worse.”
Obama praised Daimler for adding production at the Redford factory, “creating 115 good, new, union jobs.”
