Bowling with a new coach not so rare

San Jose State likely will have a different coach Dec. 27 when it plays Bowling Green in the Military Bowl at RFK Stadium. On Monday, Colorado announced it had hired Mike MacIntyre, who took the Spartans from 1-12 in his first season in 2010 to 10-2 this year and the school's first bowl berth since 2006. San Jose State has yet to say who will take over or whether MacIntyre will remain on board for the bowl game.

Having a new coach for a bowl game has become an increasingly common theme in recent seasons. One of the most interesting interim coaches this bowl season is Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, the Badgers' former coach. He will fill in for departed Bret Bielema, the new coach at Arkansas.

Alvarez will leave the business of finding Bielema's replacement for after the Rose Bowl. He took on the job at the request of the team's six captains. With a 3-0 record in the Rose Bowl, it's little wonder why he was asked to take over.
