A man and a woman have recently been arrested for a 2008 armed robbery at a Gainesville supermarket, police said.
Richard Ashley McCoy, 28, of no fixed address, was charged with robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony, Prince William County police said. Nnenna Jeanette Onunaku, 26, of Norfolk, was charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony.
On Oct. 16, 2008, a Shoppers Food Warehouse employee was standing outside the store when an armed man approached her, took her into an office in the store and took an undisclosed amount of money, police said. A police dog led officers to clothing that the robber is believed to have discarded while he fled.
In February of this year, Prince William County police received confirmation that DNA from the clothing identified McCoy as the robber. McCoy, who this year was a prison in Pennsylvania on unrelated charges, was transferred to the District on Nov. 27 and served warrants for the Shoppers Food robbery. He was then transferred to Prince William County on Dec. 5.
Onunaku was a Shoppers Food employee who was present during the robbery. During the investigation, detectives learned that she knew McCoy and was involved in planning the robbery. She was arrested on Dec. 7 in Norfolk and is awaiting extradition to Prince William County.
