Two fatally shot in Southeast D.C.

Detectives are investigating two separate slayings that occurred this weekend in Southeast D.C.

Shortly after 7:45 p.m. Saturday, housing police were called to the 5000 block of Ayers Place SE and found 22-year-old Darnell Rivers in a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. Rivers was pronounced dead by a member of the medical examiner's office, police said. Two other adult male victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital.

D.C. police were called to the second incident, on the 3400 block of Croffut Place SE, shortly after midnight Sunday. They located Angelo Alphonso Payne, 23, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Va. man charged with football player's murder

A Gainesville man was arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a former high school football star, Fairfax County police officials said.

Johnny E. Bonilla, 22, was charged with murder in the slaying of 19-year-old Zavier Stringfellow. Police believe Stringfellow was stabbed during a struggle after he and Bonilla met Friday evening. An officer found Stringfellow's body inside a minivan that had crashed in the Vienna area.

Stringfellow played football for Battlefield High School in Prince William County and more recently played at Ferrum College.

Police seek info about SUV that ran over girl

D.C. police are seeking information about a vehicle that ran over a 16-year-old District girl who later died.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville that was traveling east on New York Avenue crossed the intersection with First Street Northwest and struck the girl. The teen then landed in the roadway and was run over by a tan SUV with D.C. registration, police said.

The Pontiac stayed at the scene, but the SUV didn't stop. The girl was taken to a hospital and died Saturday.
