A Prince William County police officer has been injured in a collision while on-duty, police said, and the driver of the car that struck the officer's cruiser has been charged.

About 4 a.m. Friday, the officer was driving westbound on Opitz Boulevard in a marked police cruiser when a 2000 Nissan Maxima traveling northbound on Gideon Drive went through a red light at the intersection and struck the cruiser, police said.

The officer lost consciousness because of the impact, but she regained consciousness at the scene. She was then flown to a hospital, treated for her injuries and released.

Police determined that the Nissan had faulty breaks. Its driver, 50-year-old Nii Aryee Mensah, was arrested on a reckless driving charge Friday and has a court proceeding scheduled for Feb. 13.

Friday's crash comes just days after another Prince William County police officer, Chris Yung, was killed in the line of duty in a motorcycle crash.
